ZANDELLE „Twilight On Humanity”

With the opening chant “Warlords of Steel” you, the listener, knows you are in for a classic dosage of thundering power metal. That is precisely what you get, and Zandelle play their metal styled after Omen, Halloween and classic Warlord. TWILIGHT ON HUMANITY is bloodthirsty and forceful without being over-calculated and formulated. This is raw, traditional, metal performed by a very convincing New York outfit.

Led by George Tsalikis (vocals), ex-Gothic Knights, who has a very clear vocal delivery but who also likes to go falsetto at times, Zandelle are putting power metal back on American soil. Heavy, almost thrash metal guitars, prevail throughout most of TWILIGHT ON HUMANITY, 'Warlords of Steel', 'Lord of Thunder', 'Delusions' and 'The Cycle' all showcase fast drumming by Bob Delmini and the tumultuous dual-guitar attack of Anthony Maglio and T.W. Durfy features elements of Metallica and Mercyful Fate. The wailing vocals also nearly reach Mercyful Fate/King Diamond proportions at time.

Amidst all the mayhem there is room for one ballad, the sappy 'Eternal Love' that many metal fans will likely gripe about. But the song is actually quite solid and it doesn't damper the spirit of the epic tale. A few of the other tracks, 'A Hero's Quest' and the title-songs start out slow with spoken or soft vocal lines, but they slowly build up steam, and it is the narrative buildup in the 12 minute closer that makes the CD well worth a listen. So if we put one ballad aside, TWILIGHT ON HUMANITY should easily entice fans of the power metal genre, and will interest most fans of 80s underground metal. At the time of recording, former guitarist Joe Hartoularos played bass on the CD and Zandelle still has an opening in that department.
