HYPERION is a technical death metal band hailing from the Ukraine. Journalists have compared their music to such bands as DEATH, NOCTURNUS, DISSECTION, AT THE GATES, and DEPRESY. The comparisons to DEATH and NOCTURNUS are the most obvious. Through in a hint of NILE and you can begin to imagine the type of mayhem this group creates.

The album’s first true song and title track (an intro opens the album) “Through Centuries” defines the DEATH, NILE, and NOCTURNUS influence. The guitars open in dramatic fashion, letting heavy cords ring. This ringing of cords is like a warrior blowing his horn to signal the battle’s beginning. DEATH mastered the technique, so the DEATH influence is shown first. Blasting drums and blurry guitar speed follows, which slows down into a cult-like rhythm that follows Pastr’s diabolic chanting in ancient tongues. This aspect of the group surely shows a leaning towards NILE. The spacey, somewhat distant keyboards that soon enter pay homage to Sci-Fi death metallers, NOCTURNUS.

“Through Centuries” is an impressive showing of technical, death metal muscle. Tracks like “Visions” show the band’s ability to rapidly change tempos and mood. One moment, Pastr’s guttural vocals lead a vicious, speeding death metal charge. Before you can say Pete Sandoval, the group slows to a heavy, rolling groove complete with empyreal keyboards. Keyboards are placed throughout each song, although not necessarily following the slower parts. “Rise of Hyperion” is set in motion by dumbfounding speed that follows the keyboards, note for note. The guitars and drums seem to be going at warp speed, but because the keyboards stay at a medium pace, the guitar and drums also stay at the same note. This type of floating keyboard work tends to work much better for metal bands than flying all around the keys in Mozart fashion.

Although HYPERION lives thousands of miles to the east of the U.S., they have effectively combined some of the best characteristics of American Death Metal. Because of their distance, DeathGasm has their work cut out for them because with the style and proficiently to which this group plays, HYPERION would do quite well supporting a band like MORBID ANGEL during a North American tour. With DeathGasm Records’ domestic location, though, U.S. death metal fans should have no problem obtaining this gem!
