Cool Songs: Immortal, In The Night, Mean Machine

Their music among the purest expressions of power metal imaginable with its shameless cheese and mighty emphasis on melody, Dream Evil are still quite the funny bunch. Having forged a career unequaled in terms of sheer ridiculous-ness that began with the Dungeons n Dragons themed “Dragonslayer” to the near-perfect “Book Of Heavy Metal” followed by the retrogressive “United,” all guns blazing has always been Dream Evil’s marching orders despite the accompanying snickers from their audience. And snicker you will for this year’s cliche buffet titled “In the Night.” Try the lyrics from “The Ballad”: We are made of metal/Our hearts are made of steel/Even though we’re stained with blood/You know we’ve kept that sex appeal/Swords and axes reflects the light/Gods spreading metal in the night!

Like, ugh, right?

Now sporting irreverent stage names to match their insipid songs, the musical unit fronted by Nick Night (that’s just longtime singer Niklas Isfeldt) whose epic throatwork bellies the music’s kindergarten themes, charges to battle with invigorating twin guitars and a galloping rhythm section run by the Pete Pain/Pat Power tandem (bass and drums, respectively). Fans of everything from UDO to Saxon and Primal Fear are gonna dig the iron bound fusillades that predominate here, whether its the majestic opener “Immortal,” the rumbling title track, or the rollicking “In the Fires of The Sun.” Chunkier fare also abounds such as the arena rock anthem “Kill, Burn, Be Evil,” the self explanatory “Bang Your Head,” and the thunderous “Frostbite.”

But no matter the exquisite axework from either Richie Rainbow (one super-producer named Fredrik Nordstrom) or Danee Demon, both whose predilection for hooks is unbelievable, there are serious stinkers lurking in this swamp of well worn metal cliches. Foremost is the odious power ballad titled, uh, “The Ballad” that comes off as a spoof of such songs, and the saccharine pop sweetness infecting “See The Light” and “The Unchosen Ones,”which is a sequel to an earlier tune from their backlogue. Certainly not all bad, funny on occasion, and an avalanche of retarded fun in general, Dream Evil is what metalheads need to chilax from their far-too-extreme playlists.
