THE ORANGE MAN THEORY – Interview with Gianni

Almost all people know about theory of Green Man, but not every knows about theory of Orange Man. What is it theory? Hahaha…

Yeah, it refers to The Pedestrian Traffic Light, which is definitely Orange (even tough many people see it as Yellow or Amber). For us the Orange Man Theory represents the state of doubt and the lack of certainties about future and life itself. When crossing the road with the Orange Man signal you could run the risk of being killed or injured run over by a car as soon as the Orange turns Red. So you choose to cross as well as we have chosen to set up the band and play the music we wanted to play. We are aware that this is such a risky “path for life” but we also know that’s what we like to do. For us Oranges the theory also represents the psychological condition of those who make underground music in the world, especially in Italy.

Gosh, not only I like philosophize, hahaha… Psychedelic Metal Core – Do you agree with my qualification of your music?

Yes Gnom. It could suit us. We appreciate when people who have listened to our album try to give a definition of our style. It’s always a surprise ahahah

In your music I have listened similarities to bands in style of THE SEX PISTOLS, NIRVANA, TOOL or EYEHATEGOD. Are they my associations only? What did bands influence on your works?

Nirvana is a band that we have loved when we were teenager and so do Sex Pistols. Tool not so much and neither Eyehategod. Of course we have been influenced by lots of bands of different genres. Today is the day, Don Caballero, Man or Astroman, Converge, Black Sabbath, Fantomas, Grandfunk Railroad, Metallica (82-88), Opeth, Slayer, Dazzling Killmen, Neurosis, Napalm Death, Hank Williams and many more… As all of us keep listening to different kinds of music I think it’s normal that Oranges sounds as a synthesis of them, tough our influences don’t come only from music…

In 2005 you have given your first album “Riding A Cannibal Horse From Here To…”. It's the very funny title of album. Firstly, the title have made me associations with band CANNIBAL CORPSE, hahaha … (?)

Cannibal Corpse? No, nothing to do with them. This is the metaphor of our journey to the US. The awareness that what the future holds is not calculable… Of course this is linked to “The Orange Man Theory” itself.

Secondly, the full title of the album sounds “Riding And Cannibal Horse From Here This Clinton, it MA”. You can unroll the idea of this title?

No, it’s about the story of a guy who has to face a deep crisis and breakdown due to the destruction of his life as a zombie-virus has infected all his relatives, friends, his girlfriend, and his horse too. Chased by those creatures that want to eat him, he escapes from his hometown riding the over-mentioned cannibal horse. He doesn’t know exactly where to go but he just knows that he gotta go in order to discover the significant of his life and his own role into the universe. This is a post-modern tale about desperation and willpower.

Steve Austin from TODAY IS THE DAY helped you in production of the album, besides he gave own vocal for the track “007 (ce fa 'on Pippa)”… How was co-operation between you?

Steve appreciated our music and wanted us to record our album with him. The collaboration with him was great and we are totally satisfied of having his featuring on our debut-cd too. This experience made us grow up as persons and as band.

“007 ce fa na pippa” was going to be an instrumental track that we wanted to use as ghost track or shit like that. Steve’s vocals came up very spontaneously as he got in the record room and started screaming his lung out. The result couldn’t be anything but weird and insane. He also was proud of the way the track came out. We have a good memory of that time and the whole recording sessions as well.

I know that also quite a lot people helped you by recording this material. Did some dissonances or funny situations appear between you?

Yes, we have countless funny things happened during the US sessions. Some of them have been filmed in the “Making of Riding A Cannibal Horse” video. Check it on our website.

Your the titles of tracks are very twisting, like your music, e.g. “Vampires in the Sun (Surfin' Transylvania)”, “Vortex of Cows into the Sweet Tornado”, or mentioned earlier “007 (ce fa 'na Pippa)”, “Riding A Cannibal Horse From Here To Clinton, MA”… Say something about origin of these titles and about their texts.

Thanks for “very twisting”. Song titles aren’t all easy to explain. Sometimes they’re about the movies that we loved through our life like Back to the future (“Where we’re going…”) or Biollante vs Godzilla (“Biollante ’s Dawn”) and weird situation that happened since we’ve been hanging and playing together. “Vortex of cows” refers to a scene from the movie Twister and “007 ce fa na pippa” is an ironic Roman slang expression that means that we aren’t good at keeping a secret…ahahah

I suspect that you arouse in the public total madness and amok on your concerts, hahaha … And is it possibly differently?

Yes, sometimes happens that the guys are over-excited… We got psyched when people freak out at our shows and we wouldn’t change it for the world.

Did you play for more orthodox metal's public yet?

Yes we did. True Metal attendance is the best. We have a big respect for it.

What concert plans do you have for the rest of year?

We are still rocking all across Italy. In july we’ll be going to South Of America for a big tour of a month and half.. After the summer we plan to tour Germany and more things to come… This is only the result of a hard work and passion. We are gonna keep this project alive.

And general band plans? Maybe some next album?

5 brand new tracks are already composed and we are performing them live. We have no plan yet about when and where recording our second album. For now we want to play as much as we can and have fun.

Are you satisfied with co-operation with promotive agency Alkemist Fanatix?

Carlo is a nice person and a capable manager. He’s been into the underground music for years and has the right experience needed to do this job. We are one of the first bands that signed to Alkemist Fanatix and we’ve ever felt comfortable in working with him.

OK. Thanks for this interview! THE ORANGE MAN THEORY has something to notification to the end, hahaha …

Thank you Gnom. We’ve got a great deal of pleasure out. See you on tour!
