DEFLORE – Interview with Christian Ceccarelli

Recently I linked co-operation with Italian Promotive Agency Alkemist Fanatix Europe. The agency in one's stable has teams, which have very innovatory approach for wide understood rock-metal music… Just Italian DEFLORE is such team, which he beguiled me his psychedelic-industrial powerful sounds and in the review I gave them the most points – 10/10, and I did not do it before with other band!…

Does the name of the band mean defloration?

Absolutely NO! We are not a satanic or “manowar” style band! The name of the band born joking on the name of a cheap deodorant called “defloralfresh”….then we decided for DEFLORE because we appreciated the sound that this word produced.

Why did you name your music “Human Indu[b]strial”, the same like the title of the album? Maybe better it would be simply to name your music classically e.g. “industrial metal”. Subsound Records qualified you as “elektro mental grooves”. I have the conclusion… Does however your music has some differing elements from typical industrial metal?

We don’t like being closed in one definition, industrial metal was too tightened for us.. we try to explore all the possibilities that music and technology give us, we also try to navigate through psychedelic atmospheres, like electronic dub or trip hop (we love bands like Massive Attack or Portishead) and to mix it with the beats of industrial. We decided to give to our style a brand new name: Human Indu[b]strial. Human because our music is REAL, we play everything and we try to recreate all the sounds during the live shows; Indu[b]strial it’s a mixed words that want to mean INDUSTRIAL IN DUB…

Why did you resign with lyrics entirely? Only their substitute are some samples of monologues. The vocals in GODFLESH are very cool. It's ok.…

The Godflesh was a very big band that we discovered only few years ago. They sing we don’t! The question is that we don’t want a singer or something that keeps attention of the audience, we want to communicate only with our instruments and sounds. Personally I think that today it’s not a singer what we need; our songs don’t need a voice to keep it up.

The titles of your tracks are very scheming. However it's a pity there aren't lyrics, e.g. “More Gods Than Devils”, “Orto D-Ossa” or “S-Zwein”…

Yes, we are an instrumental band, but we have a great fantasy so we like to give particular names to our compositions. All the song names have their own meaning, it came from a sample or from the feeling that the song gave us. For example the name “Orto-d-ossa” came from the sample I used in the center of the track; I’ve take it from the orthodox songs of the Rumanian Church that I listened to during a Journey in Bucharest. Orto-d-ossa has a double meaning: Orthodox and, translating from Italian, it’s like “Field of bones”… “More Gods Than Devils” it’s what we feel like: we are not a metal satanic band but something stronger and louder like our sound… very close to the divine.

Is “Human Indu[b]strial” your only material?

H.I. is our first official album. During the last years we have produced three promo cd:

2000 “Superkings” (I love this release from the songs to the cover artwork!!)

2001 “3”

2002 “Emo”

It’s all good material and we are proud of it, also today!

On your concerts funs can't jump and have fun, because the pace of your music ranks to slow. So, what do your fans participate on shows?

During our live shows we try to create different moods with music: from violent and saturated industrial rock to psychedelic-noise (like Pink Floyd) soundscapes, so the audience sometimes bang their heads and sometimes trips (especially when drinking a mushroom tea). However, today we are playing also some new fast and heavy stuff during the shows…. we are creating a new monster and it will bite!

Do you use some decoration for concerts?

We are trying, with the help of the Videoframes Video Lab, to employ visuals during the live shows, every song will have it’s own soundscape, it’s own vision…we are trying to translate our music in vision and to give our message not with simple words, but with the sound (that touch you, it’s a physical experience) and with visions (that helps you to concentrate to the music).

What music do you listen every day?

We listen to different kinds of music: personally in this days I’m in love with Fantomas, Neurosis, Unsane, QOTSA, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Ufomammut; but I also love the intelligent electronic music like Autechre, Aphex Twin, Underworld, Richard Devine and many more.

Is your fascination of industrial music support by some philosophy?

The only philosophy for us is our SOUND: Powerful, true and enormous. Our sound is our voice and we’ll spread this message to create a new breed of music, we are so bored and disappointed by the modern music scene (gothic, industrial, emo, new-metal…..We think: It’s all the same shit!) , we want some intelligent music, something different, we think we are one of the possibility for the future of music!

Alkemist Fanatix Europe?

A.F. is our promotion agency for Europe. They are working in the right direction, but we have to wait a little bit to see what they will reach for us.

Subsound Records?

Subsound Records is a brand new independent label from Rome that gave us the possibility to produce a good album. Davide “The Boss” believes in us and is trying to create a new italian scene of electronic noise rock!

What does the Italian's industrial scene look?

I don’t like the Italian music scene…(I know, nobody doesn’t like Italo Disco, hahaha… Gnom) few good bands, few ideas… The Italian bands that I like are Aquefrigide, Ufomammut and Dope Stars Inc.

When will we see a next album?

I don’t know when exactly we will record our next album… We have a lot of good ideas and we will work on it to create a better new album.

The climate of future album will be similar surely? And maybe will you create some innovations?

For the new album we are experimenting new instruments and possibilities. Anyway the songs will be more direct and heavy, sometimes more melodic (something new for us), and every track will have it’s own personality. We are open to innovations…so sure it will be innovative…like us!

What do you have the plans for 2006 year?

For the 2006 we are planning the European promotion of “Human Indu[b]strial”, gigs in Italy and all over Europe and we are preparing with Videoframes our new Videoclip.

OK. Thanks for the interview! The last words always belong for band!!!

Not to much to say, only one thing for the readers: “never stop to research….there’s always something different.”
