NINNUAM – Interview with Thord

Land of metal and brutal bands, “Sweden”. That's what I think about this country. The shelter of all kinds of metal music, from Arch Enemy, to Dark Tranquillity, to Inflames, and to many other bands that rock our world.
Ninnuam, a brutal fine death/black metal band coming from Sweden. We got the chance and big honor to have an interview with Ninnuam's drummer “Thord”. He spoke about the band and their future plans. He was such a nice fellow with an easy-going mind.

Hello, When did u find out that you wanna change the name of your band from “yXa” to “ninnuam”?

Hey! As “yXa” we had just 4 members from the start. We had no clue of what type of music we were going to play. But we manage to come up with some tunes that we though would sound cool with some synth/keyboards. So we tried that out and asked a friend of ours to do the vocals. He had never done that before but he manage to scream in a way that fitted our music great. So we did a couple of songs and performed them on a local arrangment. We got great responce and dicided to take it a step forward. So we changed the namn into “Ninnuam”.

Most of bands when they started to form one, they started it something like a side project, when did you realize that you want to be a real band with a permanently presence?

Like I just said. After our first performance we felt like taking in a step forward. We hired a new bassplayer after that our old one moved to another city. And shortly after the first performance we recorded our first demoCD. None of us had any other band to play with at that time so it felt natural to take that step.

What are the difficulties you have faced so far? I mean whether in recording or performing?

The whole recording process is a bit difficult. In our case anyway. No one of us has any experience of recording in a studio. Sure, I have recorded some shitty demos but that doesn’t count. (laugh) And it’s little hard to get your voice heard when you’re in a band with 5 more members. Everyone wants his sound. (laugh)

(Laugh) Tell me Thord, Will there be more albums recorded with your Finnish music Label?

We have sign for at least 2 records with Low Frequency rec. So you can expect at least one more record from us through them.

Personal question, how long it took you to play that fast? I'm not good with drums but I love it..

I don’t know really. I just played and out it came. (laugh) I’m not a drummer from the start. I started to play guitar from the beginning. Then I just liked to play some drums in the rehearsal room. But when we started “yXa” it was the first time I actually played metal.

How many hours do you rehearse daily?

[iright:thord_live.JPG]

I wish I had the time to rehearse every day. Unfortunately, I just rehearse 2-3 days a week and like 2-3 hours every time. But that’s often with the other members. But I play a lot on my knees at home. (laugh)

(laugh)…ok…Any concerts preformed outside Sweden?

No, not yet. But we would love to get across the borders. At least around Europe.

I have to say that Sweden is the shelter of all kinds of metal genre…specially black/death metal….any Swedish band you look up to?

There are many great bands here. Just look at bands like Dark Funeral, The Haunted, Arch Enemy and In Flames. What’s not to look up to !?

Your idol Drummer?

There are a lot of great drummers out there. But the ones that made me wanna play metal like the way I play today are Joey Jordinson, Matte Modin, Nick Barker and Vinnie Paul to name a few.

I knew you would say “Nick Barker”…

Indeed…(laugh)

[icenter:ninnuam_live.JPG]

(Laugh) Ok! Now tell me…What do you do outside the band?

Mostly work. I have my own firm. Then I’m putting up some shows in my hometown and just hang out.

Do you/any members of the band got other side projects?

Yes some of us have some side project. Nothing serious. All our energy goes to Ninnuam. I can only speak for myself but I need to play with other people to get inspiration for Ninnuam.

What's with the blood “thing” over your bodies on stage?

[iright:ninnuam_blood_stage.JPG]

(laugh) That just something we though was cool in the beginning. Then it just became our “thing”. You can say it is our special spice for our energic performance.

Your fav ninnuam song/lyrics?

Hard to say. Depends on what mood I'm in. Right now I must say it is Scar Salvation, because we did a funny “twist” with it on our last rehearsal. (Laugh)

Are you satisfied with what you guys have achieved so far?

More than expected. We never thought it would come to the point that we should get a record deal. We just wanted to play for fun and play live as much as possible. And we still play because we like it.

How do you see ninnuam in the up-coming 10 years?

10 years is a long time. But I hope that we could do some tours in the future. I know for sure that we will record some more records.

You got so many positive reviews on your album . Did you guys expect that?

Yes we have. We never thought that people actually would like it that much. We just thought that the record would get lost among thousands of metal records. But it’s great to read reviews like that when you have worked hard for it.

Where would you like to perform? (Outside Sweden)

[ileft:ninnuam_group_01.JPG]

Everywhere. First of all Europe, but it would be great to do the states. And of course Egypt.

Future Plans?

We’re working on some new song for our next album right now. So all our energy is on that.

Final Words

Keep your eyes and ears open for the Swedish act Ninnuam. You will hear alot of us in the future. No one is safe. HAIL METAL!

Thank you Lord Thord for your time and wish you all the best guys!
