CONQUEST OF STEEL – Interview with Conquest of Steel from the UK

Right away I'm gonna tell you that I haven't heard anything about your band ever until I saw your review in a swedish mag. Now, you must tell us the most important. Please continue!

Hail Marie. I'm surprised you've never even heard the name before considering how long we've been around though I think we all know our influence was never as large as we would have liked. The history of Conquest stretches right back to the early 80's which is something we're very proud of but not something we're looking to trade off like so many other bands.

Tell us about “priests of metal” as still are available? Please correct me if I'm wrong. According to your review then, was it a fair review in your opinion?

Yeah, priests is still available, the response to it has been excellent people seem to really dig where we are coming from even if they've never heard of us before. All we're really trying to do is make heavy metal the way it should be !! The review in the swedish rock magazine seemed to recognice and appreciate this.

Tell us about your split 12″ conquest is about to release! What is the title? When is it gonna be released?

The split 12″ is out now and it's the sos split featuring us and this excellent young british band Evanesce. The release is limited to 500 hand numbered copies on coloured vinyl and the material will only ever be available through this one pressing. Our tracks come from our 1989 stadiums of steel tour, (originally recorded with the intention of a second live album) and the evanesce stuff is all new apart from one live track and is called sower of sedition (hence sos).

What is your opinion about the swedish metal brothers and sisters? Are we good metal warriors or what?

The swedish certainly know how to rock as metal brothers and sisters they are second to none!!!

At your live front then? You guys probably played live a lot? So, when can we be able to hear you here in sweden?

We play live a lot in england but it's been a long time since we hit international shores, but any promoters out there you book the shows we'll bring the metal (beer must be in the rider though!!)

I'm really curious about your lyrics, I must tell you! Anyway describe for us, will you? I understand that your lyrics are very important?

The lyrics are very important for us and at the same time a real point of contention for a lot of other people. They say cheesy and laugh at them but we have only two styles of lyrics, the first are just about metal how cool it is. The second try to tell a story (generally about metal and how cool it is).but basically with the lyrics it is all in the attitude they are 1984 and so are we.

What does the record labels say about your music then? I mean, soon we should be able to get your full'lenght?

Up till now we have had nothing but shit off labels (which is unfortunately why you've never heard of us). The split 12″ is being released through a small british label no face records who have been very cool. We may work with them in the future, for now the plan is to buy back the masters to the back catalogue while at the same time recording a new album. Unfortunatley it all comes down to money.

Until we gonna be able to hear your band live here, describe a live'show?

A live show with the steel basically means metal, sweat, denim, spikes and blood, the fans here are pretty rabid which is how we like it but I'm sure you swedish guys can keep up. The bottom line is when you come to see the steel you'd better be ready to rock or die!!

Rehearse, is that important in your opinion? Some bands told me that they don't have to rehearse!! It's strange isn't it?

Rehearsals depend on the band,we don't like to over do it because it kills the passion but we don't like to be shoddy either you've to find the middle ground.
