HORFIXION – Interview with Sam

Hello Sam! I know that you live near Quebec, generally it is a known French speaking part of Canada. Are you the offspring's of the colonial French? At least it seems so when I look on your last names, and the last song from “Rage”.

Hi Art, effectively we are from the French Canada province that's called Quebec. Yes, I'm a French Canadian!

Do you feel some kind of connection with your countryman behind the ocean?

I don't really understand the question but I could say that everyone is equal to me so I don't love Canadians more than any other people.

Ok. This is the last question about your country. Some time ago I saw a TV program about people from Bloc Quebecois. Those people want distribute Canada. What do you think about this interior policy? Does this distributing change something?

I'm not very interrested in politics… if they split Canada, Quebec will become a country instead of a province. According to me, it could be a good thing because Quebec is a French province and the rest of the Canada is English.

I see you dream about a free and independent Quebec – ha, ha… Do you think that Quebec is economically strong enough to survive as an independent country?

I don't really know the answer, it's probably because no one know what will happen if we become independent that Quebec is still in Canada.

I haven't had a chance yet to read anything about HORFIXION in polish official and unofficial magazines. I think I might say that I'm the first person from Poland that interviews you.

Yes, you are the first to interview us as a Polish magazine. We only sent 3 promo cd's to Poland; the other was Krypta and Embamed Alive magazine.

You said that any polish magazines didn't interview you and you don't know Poland. Is it true?

Yes, I said that I didn't know Poland and I still don't know Poland! I only got a few contacts like you.

My information on your band ends at “Rage” Is it your own material? Was there something before this material? I think it was very good on the cd, my soul goes to God when I hear this stuff… ups… maybe I'm too enthusiastic?

We did a demo before, but it was recorded in our practice room. This was our first recording but we only sold it to our friend. It wasn't good enough for promotion. That's why we have recorded “Rage' mini-cd. The 4 songs have been recorded and mixed in a weekend. We have tried to do the best we could with the money we had. We sent more than 400 cd's as a part of a promotion to metal radios and zines all around the world and we received good reviews and comments that Horfixion plays a kind of metal music that is often compared to old thrash metal. We're trying to do it more modern, because there aren't a lot of new thrash metal bands. I told you that Horfixion will record their first full album in October but I can't tell you when the cd will be ready.

On the demo “Rage” was supposed to be a multimedia version, but something didn't come out right and it was recorded as a normal CD. Do you plan to put a video clip on your forthcoming album?

No, the songs featured in the multimedia section are old from our first demo.

How did zines, radio stations, and labels review “Rage”? Do you want to flood the world with your new material?

The reviews have been better than we speculated. They've been really good, most of the time we got 7/10 or 8/10. It's very good for a demo recorded in a few days for $500 (U.S $300). We have received a lot of airplay from metal radios where we've sent our demo cd (more than 200 stations). “Rage” hasn't been distributed yet but it opened a lot of opportunities for our new album.

You present musical style is a mixture of thrash metal with death metal, isn't it? Also your fascination to play out pioneers like: METALLICA, MEGADETH, SEPULTURA, DEATH.

Some people say that thrash metal is dead, other that it's alive or resurrecting slowly… but we play the music that we love. Anyway, where I live all kinds of metal are not really popular… but it's getting better and better for us. Our new songs are more modern but always belong thrash metal.

Creating music like you represent, you need to know how to play the instruments perfectly. And you along with your friends know that…Maybe I'm deaf but how long have you been playing together? How long do you practice?

We concentrate a lot; we practice almost 2 hours every day. We have to practice and at the same timework on our new songs. We also concentrate on our personal talent and trying to improve songs…

The lyrics you write, like “trashers” should, are probably about the terrible things that happen on earth. I'm asking because I only know a couple of bad words in English…Not to mention French

Our lyrics are about things of our lives, emotions and feelings like frustration, anger, hate…etc. I love to sing songs that make sense. It's easier to sing when you feel the song.

If I understood you right, your lyrics are about your emotions and feelings. If you see something on TV that's evil, you get angry and you write songs about it?

It's possible that I've been writing some songs inspired by TV but majority of the lyrics are born from what happened to me or someone I know.

You didn't tell me that the line-up of HORFIXION changed. Maybe Erick wasn't so good? The place was filled with Rich. Why did Erick quit the band?

The main reason why Erick quit HORFIXION is his musical style; he was more into black metal. But we decided to do change this because Rich have already played with us and wanted to come back.

The new material, new logo and new music. Your new material “Disynchronize” surprised me. The vocal is the same but your creation is more aggressive and more intensive… virtually you have everything new, even e-mail and www addresses.

Yes! It's a lot of small details but it's very important. For the album, we decided to get a more professional logo adapted for us. I did our first logo with limited resources but the second one was designed by a professional graphic. The music evolved naturally, it's the result of practice, experience and time. I've worked a lot on my vocals because it was the most important thing to improve. And the new web site, with new address and e-mail (www.horfixion.com and horfixion@horfixion.com) is the easiest access to our world.

On the “Disynchronize” you only put two tracks from “Rage”. But it makes me think why didn't you put “Rendez-Vous Avec la Mort” on “Disynchronize”. This track would add a little bit of exoticism for album.

Because “Rendezvous avec la mort” was already on our first demo (“Let The Nightmare Begin”) and “Rage” so we couldn't put it on our new cd.

Are there any good bands in Canada? I know personally only know “VOI VOD”, “INFERNAL MAJESTY”, and “RAHOWA”.

There are a lot of good bands in Canada, especially in the province of Quebec. Some of them are “Obliveon”, “Anonymus”, “Gorguts Cryptopsy”, “Martyr” and many more. Voivod is a band that I like but I don't know Infernal Majesty and Rahowa.

Sorry, forgot about “GORGUTS”(they're very good) or ANNIHILATOR (it was a very, very good band). What do you think about ANNIHILATOR?

As a thrash metal fan, Annihilator is one of my favorite band. I own all of their cd's. I think their new cd “Criteria for a black widow” is excellent. They are very talented musicians and an example to follow.

In the song “Tears Of Sand” the first solo played Daniel Mongrain from GORGUTS from this GORGUTS??? – Ha, ha… I see that you have good connections. Did take you long to persuade Daniel to play with you?

Daniel Mongrain from Gorguts is playing a solo on our instrumental song. Daniel is a long time friend. He's also playing in a band called Martyr. We played with them a couple of times. So we've asked Daniel if he wanted to help us with our album as a guitar technician, he accepted our offer and he was really happy to help us.

HORFIXION does not take all your time, so it sure is a nice addition in your live. What do you do in your free time? Do you hunt Grizzlies and other animals for profit, or do you fight with Indians?

No, I'm working in Electricity. I also had a girlfriend. I love to listen to music, surf the net with on my computer, and watch movies…

I like the Internet a little bit, but I also like watching movies. What kinds of movies interest you? Comedy, S-F, horror, action or maybe psychological drama…? I like fantasy movies about adventures of heroes like “Conan the Barbarian”. Also I like reading books about the same themes… You know… The strong man stands up to fight with the demons.

I like movies, I prefer horror and action movies but I don't like reading books, the only book I have read are those I was forced to read in school!

Probably nobody made you so tired as I did! Ha, ha… we're finished! Would you like to say thanks to someone or maybe greet someone?

I would like to thank Art and all the people who read it. Stay metal! I also invite you all to visit our web-site www.horfixion.com. If you didn't understand anything is probably because I'm not really good in english!
