Scandinavians have got many interesting artists, performing various types of music, but the most popular genre is death metal, which somehow entered their hearts and does not want to let go easily. Hempa and Martin started MYKORRHIZA in 2001, as a two-piece band, and as for now, they still form the only permanent line up. The rest of the musicians are joined during sessions and live performance. Northern Remembrance is their second full-length release.
These Swedes definitely know how to play music, what is more they show, that sometimes quite intense genres can coexist naturally within one environment. Northern Remembrance is a mixture of black, melodic death and heavy metal, spiced with thrash fills. This creates a fantastic feast for everybody familiar with at least one genre from this list. Black metal enthusiasts will find cemetery-like climate, hoarse and speedy guitars and fabulous pagan drums. Death metalheads will not resist the beauty of melodic brutal power and developed rhythmic sections. Finally, those who love heavy metal, will definitely love this album for its progressive character, leading to constant changes in motifs and pace, in other words – the variety. There is no way to learn this album through and through, as there always appears something new, which has been hidden during the previous listening session, what is more, the unexpected turns create an impression of taking part in a battle, where everything is possible. It is a kind of a progressive medley, mastered and mixed perfectly, performed according to the highest standards. No time for boredom, no predictability, nothing to pick on perfect!
It does not matter, is someone is a heavy or black metal fan – if this person has a contact with such music, this album is a must. It would be a sin, not to listen to it. This perfect vortex of sounds deserves more than it is worth.
