NECRONOMICON – Interview with Freddy (vocal & guitar)

At the turn of 80/90 I met the music of German legendary Thrash Metal band NECRONOMICON by listening to the pirate tape with their third album “Escalation”. That’s why this album is special for me. But they’ve yet released six albums of mighty Thrash Metal… and in this year they go to next conquer of Europe…

Hello! The year 2019 promises to be very busy for concerts. I saw that you’ve already played in Switzerland, and soon you are going to tour The North European Tour, which will cover Sweden, Finland and Estonia… Then a month break and the conquest of Europe – Total Metal Over Europe… Anatoliy from Total Metal organized a long trip for you, hehehe… Almost a month. And as far as I know, this is not the end… Among other things, you will play in Poland (I am Polish). Have you ever played any concerts in Poland? In total, we are neighbors…

Yes, we played the last tour in Poland and in 2017, too……great guys; really enthusiastic and true fans. I love it…

What setlist are you preparing for the tour?

A mix of old songs and the new album “Unleashed Bastards”. This setlist will kick`n ass, hahahaha.

How are concerts played today compared to concerts from years ago? You probably notice the differences?

I don`t think there are a lot of differences. Surely, promoter and venue owners are dealing harder because of money and fee and the ticket prices are rising all the time. That`s a sad situation for all of us.

Do you work somewhere outside of NECRONOMICON? Do you work normally?

Yes, I have a second business cause it`s not so easy to live from the music anymore; I`m an owner of a small restaurant… really interesting business and not easy, too hahahahaha.

NECRONOMICON exists for 35 years! Only You, Freddy – co-founder of the band – remained from the original line-up. What is the driving force that makes this band still exist?

NECRONOMICON is like my “baby”; I cannot exist without this… it`s my life and my really passion. That keeps me “alive”!!!

… Usually with age, man is going to mellow. He sometimes think to create something lighter. Some veterans create their solo projects apart, like D.D. Verni from OVERKILL…

It´s the love to music, the love to Heavy Metal and especially the love to Thrash Metal. I never thought of a solo Project, cause I am Necronomicon and without me the band will no longer exist. I will keep Necronomicon alive for as long as I can.

In September 2018 you released the last album “Unleashed Bastards”… I think we could say it’s old good classic Thrash Metal! There is aggression and power, there is also a melody… How do old fans react to this album?

Awesome… and I´m really proud of this album. It`s one of my best album I ever produced. And it makes a lot of fun to play the songs alive.

And what is reaction of young generation? On one of the music videos (“Unconquered” from the album “Invictus”) I saw that young people come to your concerts.

Yes, you´re right. And for me it´s a really good sign, we`re on the right rack and path. We need the youth and their enthusiasm for Heavy Metal.

Each of your albums was released in a different label. Why did you decide for El Puerto Records this time?

I know it… it`s like a never ending story. We deliberately chose a small but very professional label. I cannot say what the future holds, I just hope it works. We`ll see.

Are the inspirations for writing texts still the same as 20 years ago?

Yes. Works events and politics provide enough material for songs and lyrics.

At the turn of the 80/90, the German Thrash Metal was appreciated in all over the world… including KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, SODOM, ASSASSIN, TANKARD, LIVING DEATH, IRON ANGEL, VENDETTA, HOLY MOSES, and of course you and a few others. To be honest, only KREATOR achieved the greatest success. NECRONOMICON did not get into the mainstream…

It`s always a personal decision where you have to develop or which way you want to go. Kreator is doing a really good job, so they deserve the success. But we, too, still have a lot to do and looking forward to the future with Necronomicon… :-))

You had the opportunity to observe how Metal music changes over the years, how it interweaves with other musical genres, how it evolves … Do you like this contemporary (modernist) approach to Metal music? Not only the music is change, but even the image of the fans (especially the young ones)…

But that`s the passion of time and quite normal. I grew up with Punk music and Thrash Metal and the time was completely different than today. Life also mean change. The really important thing is, that the love and interest in hard music like Heavy, Speed or Thrash Metal never ends and the fans live this music. As long as that`s the case everything running well.

Ok. Thank you for the interview. The end of the interview belong to You…

Hey guys, I`m so proud to be part of the Heavy Metal family and fans like you. You are my engine to make music a feel lucky to be allowed to carry this outwards. Thank a lot!!!
