THE FINITE BEINGS – Interview with Donny and Mike

Religion is something important in life of THE FINITE BEINGS… But it is not important – will you accept such status, because they play very interesting music… Unfortunately they sent the very small photos to the interview…

What was the beginning of THE FINITE BEINGS?

Donny: We originally met through playing on the worship team at our local church. Mike showed me some song ideas and we started writing and recording together in my basement.

What inspired you to creating the band?

Mike: I always had an idea for lyrical songs and a sound in mind for them. When we first started writing together I realized Donny was the missing piece. We compliment each other well in that I am very much a unique writer and he is a great composer. The combination of all this with our instrument playing and vocal abilities comprise The Finite Beings.

The band is created by only two people. You invited next two persons to recording your album. Who are they? What was their part?

Donny: Well, the other guitarist featured on the album is my father Don DePaola. He added some guitar solos in 4 songs. My dad is a composer as well so It's great anytime we can collaborate.

Mike: We were also looking for a really solid piano part in our song “The Way.” So we asked our piano player on our worship team Steve Patafio to play on the track. I think it came out great.

Well, if you are two men-band that what is with your concerts? Do you play shows?

Donny: No, we are very much a studio band. Until we find some more members we will continue to be a studio band.

Your sound is characteristic – heavy and dirty. Is it the intended effect? Currently Prog Rock bands seldom use such sound. Such sounds is bit in retro style… but sometimes is also a bit too sharp for such a music what you play.

Donny: I am very much inspired by classic progressive rock. Mike is ver much inspired by more modern hard rock. It is this combination of influences that gives us our sound. For us its not about being retro or contemporary, but bringing the music we love to life.

In addition, some moments sound a bit grotesque. I mean some of the vocals.

Mike: I agree at times we do sound grotesque or even psychotic. That really does reflect a lot of the themes and meanings behind the songs. Despite being in dark times, which a lot of the eeriness reflects along with the grotesque. We always seem to find our way back to reality and find that light at the end of the tunnel. Our music is very much a spiritual journey with all kinds of twists and turns. We encourage our listeners to simply experience the ride with us.

But on the other hand, your vocals remind me of Marillion.

Donny: Thanks

Is some special meaning of the cover-art for the album?

Mike: The cover art is a representation of humanity. The earth reflects the reality of the world we live in, and the brain represents the will and imagination of humanity wanting to go our own way. My sister did the cover art and put it together for us. I think she did a great job.

What are your lyrics about?

Mike: I write about whatever I am feeling or going through at any given time. My newly found faith in Christ is a huge influence in my writing now. I also write a lot about the mind, which is due to me being diagnosed as schizophrenic and over coming the illness a few years ago. Overall, I try to take my personal experiences and relate them to the listener in a very imaginative way. I like to write with vision.

Ok, thanks for this short interview. The last sentence belongs to you…

Thanks for the interview we are busy at work on our second album. Hope to have more music out for you soon.
