SOUNDGARDEN „Badmotorfinger”

SOUNDGARDEN „Badmotorfinger” - okładka

Don’t expect a bad review of this classic album. Soundgarden is one of my all-time favorite bands. If you considered yourself a true grunge fan in the early/ mid 90s and don’t have this album in your collection, well… you’re a fake! No offense! If you have their following “Superunknown”-album you’re almost forgiven! “Badmotorfinger” was Soundgarden’s great breakthrough and songs such as “Jesus Christ Pose”, “Outshined” and “Rusty Cage” were massive hits in the rock-charts. I guess that music reviewers (in the large magazines) considered “Superunknown” (1994) a true masterpiece but “Badmotorfinger” is my favorite though. If you listen to the 1994 album you realize that it is pretty mellow with references to Led Zeppelin and a little touch of Black Sabbath in their greater moments.

The 1991 album contains a more genuine sound but is still influenced by the bands mentioned above. The songs are very diverse. “Rusty Cage” has that punk-like attitude and I guess that Ben Shepherd’s past as a hardcore bass player gives it the right drive. The mesmerizing and churning “Jesus Christ Pose” could be something that the guys from Tool could've come up with. “Outshined” crushes you with its heavy groove (no wonder that Brad Pitt’s character in the movie “True Romance” smokes pot to this tune!). I guess you see the picture by now…

On top of all the other goodies you hear Matt Cameron’s heavy drumming and last but not least you hear Chris Cornell’s magnificent vocals, all power and might but emotion as well. I think the best way to describe it would be: Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) with more balls. The way Chris uses his falsetto outshines (bad joke) the great falsettos of the 80s – Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Rob Halford (Judas Priest). He uses it in a such non-80s way. This album, along with Metallica’s “Black Album”, Stone Temple Pilot’s “Core” and Pearl Jam’s “Ten”, triggered me to form a band and write my own material. That’s why it’s got such an emotional value to me.

10 out of 10 and don’t you dare question it!!!
