Andorra may be a small country, but the musicians from it prove that they have great heart to create some cool music. PERSEFONE is a good example of this action. This six-musician band was formed in October of 2001 and their first performances contained covers of ARCH ENEMY, IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQUILITY. But after some time the band reached a conclusion that… ‘we’ve got to make something of our own’. And thank goodness they’ve done it.

PERSEFONE is one of few bands playing melodic death metal, which will not be confused and compared with CHILDREN OF BODOM. Why is that? It is because they’ve got the unrepeatable style, which is one hundred percent different from the one, presented by Laiho and the gang. Their first LP album starts very melodic and surprises the potential listener till its very end. Fantastic ‘The Whisper of Men’ with superb keyboards parts and acoustic elements is the essence of this album, a magnificent start. And later on it goes only better: the musicians play using different styles and sounds, the technical level of their performance is very high, and I may be called an infidel, but I think, that PERSEFONE can be best described as a younger sister of good old RHAPSODY (and will probably do better than the present RHAPSODY OF FIRE). Of course there are not so many symphonic similarities, but the overall effect very often reminds the first compositions by the mighty Italians (especially the drums). And to be more precise, PERSEFONE could be put somewhere in between RHAPSODY and DIMMU BORGIR. Going further… the music is varied, with many shifts in pace and sound, the solos are outstanding, especially the one in ‘Niflheim…’. It just makes you want to have some more of it. The mood also changes, and this happens quite often: from dark, demonic but melodic, to very gruesome, cemetery-like ‘The Demise of Oblivion’. This album is a festival of sounds.

PERSEFONE can be described as one of the most promising bands on the metal scene. The styles that they linked may find out to be a good guarantee of a success. Keep it going this way and everything will be just fine.
