DISILLUSION is Metal Blade’s answer to RAMMSTEIN. Just like RAMMSTEIN, DISILLUSION hails from Germany. Also like RAMMSTEIN, DISILLUSION plays European-flavored Industrial Metal. Looking to put its stamp on the world, DISILLUSION hired Grammy winner Adam Ayan (NINE INCH NAILS, A PERFECT CIRCLE) to set the controls.

Ayan did not disappoint. “Gloria” has just the right mix. The guitars are heavy and distorted. The drums hammer at the listener’s ears with rumbling double bass. The vocals are textbook Industrial Metal, utilizing various effects and distortion. During moments where vocalist Schmidt strips away all the gear from his voice, his voice sounds like a cross between TYPE O NEGATIVE’s Peter Steel and the vocalist from RAMMSTEIN mixed with a speck of ‘80s Goth.

The group has a knack for writing memorable, intense hooks. During lull points in each song, various electronic noises fill in the soft void. “Gloria” is filled with electronic noises—blips and bleeps—and heavenly synth. “Avalanche” is arguably the heaviest and darkest song on the album. It begins in your face with fast double bass drum and a blazing riff that is more EMPEROR than NINE INCH NAILS. The guitar and the drum rhythm continues through out the song, although with fewer notes. The guitar rhythm’s slower version transforms into a futurist IRON MAIDEN.

With DISILLUSION, Metal Blade is obviously trying to run the gamut of all metal styles. They have a good thing going with this band. DISILLUSION probably puts on a killer live show with a movie screen flashing random images and a flicker light show. Is DISILLUSION the next NINE INCH NAILS? I doubt it. But if this type of music is your thing, “Gloria” is worth checking out.
