Poland’s LUNA AD NOCTUM returns with their 3rd full-length album “The Perfect Evil in Mortal.” Those familiar with the extreme metal scene in Poland may have a pre-conceived notion about what LUNA AD NOCTUM will sound like. Poland is well known for putting out pagan, sometimes NSBM black metal like GRAVELAND or early BEHEMOTH. Poland has also produced its share of world-renown death metal acts led by VADER, YATTERING, and later era BEHEMOTH. Considering the influence the above-named acts pull upon their country, one would think LUNA AD NOCTUM would seek to emulate these bands’ sound. That is not the case.

LUNA AD NOCTUM prefers to style their sound after Norway’s most popular black metal band, DIMMU BORGIR. This influence is hard to pin point through the first three songs, but by the forth song “Devilrising Impact” one can’t deny what this group is going for. When the thrashy, hammer on riff begans this song, I thought it sounded like “Nexus Polaris”-era COVENANT (when they still spelled it with a c.) When I further listened, their attraction to DIMMU became obvious due to the band’s affinity for soundtrack quality keyboard passages, a clear, thick production, catchy thrash rhythms entwined with fiery tremolo rhythms, and demonic vocal effects. Keyboards that majestically rise and fall create a nightmarish, ritualistic satanic atmosphere. In this fashion, LUNA AD NOCTUM is more akin to “Anthems” –era EMPEROR, in that they use the keyboards as more of a backdrop, than DIMMU BORGIR who tends to over use keyboards, making piano the focal point of their music. LUNA AD NOCTUM’s music is led by the Tomas Infamous’ speedy, metallic riffing and Dagor Born in Flames’ blasting, trigger-laden drums.

When considering the massive popularity of EMPEROR and DIMMU BORGIR, it is not too much of a stretch to imagine LUNA AD NOCTUM gaining a massive, world-wide following. The band has already done many supporting slots for death metal giants, CANNIBAL CORPSE. If the group is able to secure a major opening slot for a European tour with a big name like SATYRICON, OLD MAN’S CHILD, or a similar band of this style, LUNA AD NOCTUM could see their popularity rocket to the moon!
