A label introducing another metalcore band to the masses is something to be expected in these times. It seems like labels are pushing out new metalcore bands in assembly line like numbers. So when another band playing this style suddenly emerges, one is hard-pressed to get too excited. However, an extreme label like Candelight jumping on the bandwagon is reason to take notice.

OF GRAVES AND GODS must have built a name for themselves considering where they are from, New Mexico. New Mexico has nothing but cacti and cowboys, so when a band comes along that plays a popular style o f contemporary music; it would be easy to garnish a loyal following. The group’s debut album, “Slit Throat Andromeda” is something for kids to talk about while punching cattle or chasing lizards on New Mexico’s sun-baked sands. Aggressive breakdowns, trademark chug-along rhythms, and sing along choruses are prime fodder for motivating a live audience.

If OF GRAVES AND GODS can match the wall-shaking production of Eddie Garcia (PISSING RAZORS)—one of the Southwest’s leading producers—in a live setting, an impressive fan base is by any means not out of the question. The production is loud and heavy, and the guitars and drums mesh nicely. The first musical break on ‘Slit Throat’ displays the album’s production magnitude with boot stomping mosh rhythm.

Being a band of this scene, the occasional melody is bound to appear. Melodies and Gothenburg rhythms aren’t absent here, but also are not overdone and done with skill. The lighter cord manipulations employed on ‘Ashes’ are a prime example of how to create a memorable melody. OF GRAVES do not hide from their influences. Bands just can’t go wrong when they study SLAYER tab books. The guitar rhythms of ‘Part II’ immediately bring to mind SLAYER’s satanic masterpiece ‘Necrophilliac.’ The death metal/hardcore-alternated vocal style is the perfect formula for the death metal/hardcore musical see saw this group rides.

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER is a Mid-West counterpart to OF GRAVES AND GODS in their inclusion of death metal and hardcore grooves. Are OF GRAVES AND GODS likely to explode unto the unknowing masses like BDM, probably not. They, however, will bring credibility to a scene loosing face fast.
