When it comes to sicko hyper speed blasting death metal, very few bands take the opportunity to be subtle about it. In the case of Denmark’s ‘Prostitute Disfigurement’, they’re take on the style is about as subtle as a sledgehammer!! In fact these guys, save for their even sicker fellow countrymen ‘Severe Torture’, are pretty much the epitome of ultra brutal Death Metal extremity. Deciding that their original name ‘Disfigure’ was just a tad too soft in the metal world of tasteless monikers, they adopted the current handle just to make sure that everyone understood what they were about. Disfiguring Prostitutes! Ha!

With one of the more witty (or demented, you decide) names in the scene, PD has now released three full lengths since their inception back in 2000. The first two ‘Embalmed Madness’ and ‘Deeds of Derangement’ were released on Dismemberment records and Germany’s Morbid Records respectively. This new one, the disturbingly titled ‘Left in Grisly Fashion’ (with necro art work to boot) is their first for their new Dutch label Neurotic Records. You know the score folks; be prepared for some aural slaughter!

There is nothing remotely complex about the sort of music DP serve up on this ten track (s)platter. Pure and simply, ‘LIGF’ is a 29 minute and 4 second lesson in guitar driven, blast beat pummelling death metal. No fancy between track interludes, no overblown dramatic epics, just non-stop furious punishment from beginning to end. Extreme Death Metal fans need only apply. Sure, it’s been done a thousand times before and probably a whole lot better too, however the one thing that PD have going for them is an ear for riffs and the ability to infuse their compositions with some neat breaks and well placed lead work without ever really compromising their intensity or their speed. And the drumming, my god this guy Michiel is insane. Relentless blasting doesn’t exactly thrill me as a listener, but at least PD seems to have put some thought into their music as well as obtaining a stellar production through the use of Studio Excess in Rotterdam. For such an uncompromising death metal affair, everything on this sounds remarkably clear. Everything but the vocals that is.

Ahhh…the dreaded vocals. It’s debatable that the low pig-gurgling performance that frontman Niels puts forth on this disc could actually be classified as vocals. I acutely aware that such low end guttural brutality goes with the territory, but Niels is really the weak link of PD. Not one syllable is comprehendible here. It’s all just one monotonous indecipherable barrage. Clearly his pig-squeal is meant to act as some sort of conduit to the percussive element of this band, but really it’s bordering on the ridiculous. I hope the guys didn’t put too much time into the lyrics of their songs because it is simply impossible to detect any semblance of the English language being conveyed on this album. I’m not sure if the final version of this disc will have the lyrics included, but if they are they’ll be more for reading than any sort of guidance to follow while listening. All you can do, I suppose, is pig-gurgle along as well. Ultimately, ‘LIGF’ sounds like an extreme death metal ‘instrumental’ album with an annoying low hum buried in the middle of the mix. Niels is an acquired taste no question, but I reckon ‘PD’ could do a damn sight better with a more refined vocal performance next time around.

Vocal misgivings aside, PD do have a fair bit going for them. The extreme music sceptics would do well to investigate PD a little further before passing this off as some sort of straightforward mindless death metal barrage. It’s far from innovative in a very limited genre, but at the very least, PD’s musicianship is a plus and the riff ideas and lead work employed gives their song writing a touch more depth than most. For fans of the truly demented and extreme only. Oh…and prostitutes. Go Disfigure!
