Mmmm…I’m not too convinced by this one folks. There’s been a heap of praise dealt out for Glittertind and this debut release, much of it being just a tad too positive in my eyes. The fact that the sole mastermind behind Glittertind is 19 year Torbjorn Sandvik, seems to be the main reason why some scribes are falling over themselves in response to his wunderkind abilities displayed here.
No doubt the guy has some talent, hell some of this was written when he was 16! Karmageddon Media were similarly impressed, not only because of his unique musical stance, but also because of what he may achieve in the future. So far, so good!

The trouble I have with Glittertind is that it has a very limiting appeal. Firstly, everything written here (including both original and cover versions) are sung in Torbjorn native tongue. For most of us who are not Norwegian, there is absolutely no connection. Secondly, Glittertind play proud, nationalist, patriotic folks songs. ‘Metalized’ folk songs, but Folk songs nonetheless.

Now, I totally respect the intentions of Torbjorn and what he has tried to achieve with ‘Evige Asatro’, but pumped up metal versions of old traditional Norwegian folk songs is something that doesn’t have me doing cartwheels. Quite frankly, I’d rather listen to the best of ‘Warrant’! Shallow as it may be, but I have way more connection with ‘Cherry Pie’ than some wind swept mountain in Norway.
Despite the somewhat simplistic nature of his compositions and some slight production concerns, Torbjorn has obviously put his heart and very patriotic soul into this project. His parents must be very proud. As a 16 year old, writing this sort of material showcases an extremely switched on individual. I’d be truly interested in checking out what he puts out in the future. However, for now, I’m afraid that ‘Evige Asatro’ won’t be frequenting my cd player again anytime soon. Happy, party style folk songs (even metalized versions) just isn’t my thing.
