The devil breeds at Norma Evangelium Diaboli. The new album of Funeral Mist was released unexpectingly, but i cannot say this for german Katharsis, which released their new creation punctually as usually after three years. Despite that my heart rejoiced of Fourth Reich, the fourth full-lenght of this band.
Fourth Reich is a new chapter, not only in sound and atmosphere, but also the end of Katharsis' 666 context. All three previous records were released periodically every three years (2000, 2003, 2006) and every record contained 6 songs, the first album was called 666. Coincidence? The FOURTH alum is called FOURTH Reich. Also coincidence? And if you read the capital letters of song titles, you may notice that they form a word 'SERES' no matter if you read it from the begining to the end or vice versa. Facts like these are too oftenly not considerated in complexity of some black metal bands. Think. Observe. Sometimes they complete the message of an album.
Production of Fourth Reich is much cleaner than on previous releases. That suits perfectly to their progress in song structures and to the climate on the album. There are only five tracks which all together sum up 45 minutes of music. The sound is still tipical unique Katharsis sound, the only difference is that they made the whole record sound more atmospheric. Their music gained a different spirit. The parts on Fourth Reich that surprised me most were female vocals on So Nail The Hearts, solos made with great amount of feeling (the one on the track Sinn Koronation was recorded by Orlog member D. Wolfram), song Emeralde Graves and outro on the last song Sinn Koronation. Especially this choir outro made me think of magnificence of this album, it is the perfect way to wrap up Fourth Reich.
This album could be an example of a perfect progress of a band. Katharsis kept all the best parts of their creations and spiced it with improvements. But there is one thing I really miss – those very long high pitched vocals such as on the begining of the song The Last Wound from Kruzifixxion album. Anyhow, Katharsis evolved and at the same time remained on the same path they use to walk.
