Cool songs: Celebration of the Goat, for Thos who stayed Satanic, Death to All

Throughout its history, NECROPHOBIC has included among its ranks members of such touted Swedish death and black metal acts as DISMEMBER, THERION, NIFELHEIM, and DARK FUNERAL. Although the names DISSECTION and EMTOBED appear more often, NECROPHOBIC is one of the most enduring and consistent bands in Sweden. Starting in the late eighties, NECROPHOBIC releases originally tuned into the sound of their surrounding Stockholm death metal scene. Later releases kept an element of Stockholm death, but with a black metal twist. NECROPHOBIC’s latest release “Death to All” shows the band once again adhering to this black and death metal formula.

In addition to keeping true to their style, NECROPHOBIC has also kept consistent in their outward devotion to Satan. On “Death to All”, the group slithers through eight tracks of music suitable for conjuring untold evils. Tobias Sidegĺrd recites each incantation with a venomous snarl. Sidegĺrd accents many of his lyrics with a particularly nasty growl. His band mates match his aggression with a furious onrush of speed, bleak harmonies and twisted experimentation. Sebastian Ramstedt and Johan Bergebäck aren’t the most technical guitarists, however, their riffs are catchy and diverse.

“Celebration of the Goat” ignites the infernos that power “Death to All.” The disharmonic rhythms and dark melodic breaks resemble DARK FUNERAL and DISMEMBER, which imparts an extra dimension of Tartarean atmosphere. The intro and ending of “Wings of Death” include more instrumental atmosphere. “Wings of Death” is one of the slower tracks, chugging along at a medium pace, but contains the album’s darkest vibe. Haunting clean vocals instill within the track a brief moment of unholy ritualism. The proceeding title track breaks down into three parts, ending the album on a similar note to the previous track. “For Those Who Stayed Satanic” shows the group at its best. The drums on this track never slow. Moreover, it contains excellent transitions and a killer hook.

Consistency can hurl a band into obscurity or keep a loyal fan satisfied. Many of the death metal bands in Sweden have stuck to a certain formula and have endured. NECROPHOBIC may not be the most unique band, but their consistency is one of the major factors that make “Death to All” a solid record. Here there are no avant-garde experiments. Nope, “Death to All” is what NECROPHOBIC always brings—unclean and extreme satanic metal.
