GOAT OF MENDES was born in Germany in 1994. Since that time the line up was not expanded to huge changes and the band released five albums. The Book Of Shadows, the fifth one, is a pure pagan production.
The very first thing that draws the attention is the huge amount of varieties: many, many varieties. To start with the several vocal lines and its types, especially audible in The Sabbatic Goat (Blessed Be) and Guardian Spirit. The latter one is the best composition of this album a pure pagan colossus, full of mood and pace changes. Just as the whole album. The next pack of varieties is connected with the sound and mood. The song can start pretty grim and finish in a very powerful and heavy way. This album is not a mindless butchery but every song has its own character, they are pretty smart (as for pagan metal) and they develop from the beginning till the end. The guitar riffs are also varied, from lighter and repeatable to very strong and aggressive, accompanied by furious drums. There is no time for boredom. From the technical point of view the music is performed well and nicely mixed. There are no mistakes and the rhythm is kept well. One thing can really bother problems with noticing the guitar solos. The riffs are heavy and fast, that there is no place for solos, or they are simply unnoticeable. This shows, that the GOAT OF MENDES got lost in their own sauce.
This album is quite good. This is pure pagan and those folk elements make it more unique. When looking for something interesting, not boring and varied, this album is quite a good choice.
