Cool Songs: Gloria in Excelsis Ecclasia, And Silence
For those who just recently discovered the wealth of black-metal talent in France, DESTINITY is another band to file into your misanthropic mind. The groups album, In Excelsis Dementia is a demon spawn of hyper blasting, often brutal, death metal and symphonic black metal. The death metal parts, like the albums opener After the Grace of Kaos Synopsis, have a similar sound to ZYKLON. The sound is fast and brutal, yet technical. When they opt for death metal, they usually switch out of black metal shrieks to guttural death growls.
Because the first track begins with the group playing the death metal style, it led me to believe this was a death metal album, which is only partially true. The group shifts its style to symphonic black metal shortly in the album. The death metal passages pop occasionally through out the album, but the black metal parts primarily dominate the album. Its a good thing, too, because the band is much better when playing in this fashion. Although the death parts are decently played, they seem out of place, especially the annoying, guttural vocals.
The keyboard passages on In Excelsis are remarkably good. One could even say the keys are some of the best ever put down on a black metal album. Like a dark symphonic orchestra, the group offers a myriad of keyboard sounds such as piano, organ, choir, and violin. One of the highlights includes the intro on Gloria in Excelsis Ecclasia, which consists of mournful church choirs sung in Latin. This sullen intro quickly shifts into blasting black metal supported by whirling, cosmic key passages. Another favorite track comes courtesy of the aptly-titled And Silence. This track begins in a like fashion to LIMBONIC ART with subtle chiming keys that gradually pick up the energy with choir keyboards before jumping back into the black metal fire.
In Excelsis Dementia is an excellent album when the band focuses on the symphonic parts. The death metal sections definitely add diversity to the bands sound, which is important to separate them from the millions of black metal clones. However, it takes away from the superb melodies and haunting keyboard passages, and seems a bit out of place. Nonetheless, the groups mastery of spooky keyboard sounds should relate well to fans of horror-film scores and atmospheric metal.
