Cool Songs: Neutralized, Crippled Tracker
COPROFAGO picked the perfect name for this album. Unorthodox Creative Criteria is truly an unorthodox piece of musical art. Crippled Tracker sets the beginning pace with unorthodox time signatures. 15 years ago, mathematical complex patterns like the one these technicians follow would seem outrageous. Now we have MESHUGGAH to look to for reference. The first two tracks surely follow the tech metal tracks laid down by MESHUGGAH, but Neutralized sets a fire to the ass of drummer, Marcelo Ruiz who blasts away at a velocity MESHUGGAH as never attempted.
Thanks to the ecletic style of MESHUGGAH, Unorthodox doesnt really live up to its descriptive title until the group wanders onto a different path, gets off the path and enters another path; until they seem to be wandering aimlessly. The band morphs into an experimental project starting at Streams, the 7th track, up to Constriction, the 11th track. Sebastion Vergara gives his angry, power groove voice a rest and joins his band on the guitar in their concerted jam session. Spacy keyboards, violins, jazz beats, and even an Alto Sax (Motion) replace the chunka-chunka groove displayed on the early portion of Unorthodox.
Nil can be said about this groups musical abilities. Professional musicians outside the realms of metal would probably fancy this album, especially musicians involved in orchestras or marching bands. After several hard-hitting metal tracks, the subdued direction the band takes is a major letdown. Separating the experimental side from the metal side into two bands or two albums is an option this group might think about pursuing in the future. This idea seemed to work for MESHUGGAH (Fredrik Thordendal) and NEUROSIS (TRIBES OF NEUROT).
