Grief of Emeralds previous releases were more in the black metal vein, but the first thing to greet your ears when popping this little baby in the CD tray is the intensity of the guitars. They are punishing, make no mistake about it. From the opening bars until the final note, they swirl around, chopping and changing, leaving your head in a right mess until you don't know whether you are still alive or not.
The guys must have been pretty pissed off during the writing of this album as they have obviously used the music as a way of releasing their anger. For the listener this is a good thing as we have nearly an hours worth of top quality down tuned black/ death metal.
The songs are all excellently structured and executed and the vocals are literally spewed from the bowels of hell. The most violent track on this album (and for many years anywhere) is the title track. It starts off with a soothing clean guitar sound, but then the distorted guitars come in over a vicious blast beat, leading us up to a spine tingling chorus. When vocalist Johnny spits out “Cut their throats one by one, Christian termination has begun”, who are we to argue?
Part Morbid Angel, part Deicide, wholly scary. Good stuff
