Conquest is a traditional heavy metal band from St. Louis Missouri who encompass quite a few influences into their distinct style. On the song ‘No Mercy 9/11’ you will hear guitarist Mike Crook use twisting guitar distortion, very similar to Zakk Wylde, mixed with precision Jeff Waters styled runs. I feel it is a true triumph in metal music, instead of a softer American anthem such as ‘Ghosts Of Freedom’ from Iced Earth, ‘No Mercy’ has real guts and force! The song is one pissed tribute to September 11th, the angriest I’ve heard thus far! L.A. Guns also tipped their guitars on their Waking The Dead release, Blackie Lawless shed a face-painted tear in memoriam with the song ‘Hallowed Ground’, and the Pretty Maids from Denmark even got in the act with a track off the Planet Panic CD.
Derrick Brumley (vocals) uses a harsher vocal style, sometimes similar to Pantera, but his vocal range shows much more! On ‘What About Me’ he also lashes out with a tone almost akin to James Rivera (think of the Transition CD from Destiny’s End). ‘Nightmare’ is also a great track where some Rob Halford nuances show through in the vocals. Other band members include Tim Fleetwood (drums) and Robert Lloyd (bass) whose influences range anywhere from Kiss, Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath.
I’ve only mentioned three songs, but the remainder includes ‘Just Before The Dawn’, Ruin My Life’, ‘Back Against The Wall’, ‘So Cold’, ‘What About Me’, ‘Change Me’, and finally ‘Take’. There is not a weak moment in anywhere, expect a professional band churning out metal that will please fans of traditional acts such as Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Forte and Iron Maiden, but it’s also great for thrash legions into Metallica, Megadeth, Annihilator or Pantera. Musically, Conquest salutes their influences, but they are not clones. For $10 you simply get great traditional heavy metal with high quality through and through.
