Although Texan band DIVINE EVE has been around since 1992, their name probably isn't familiar to most of us. Until 1995 they recorded two self-financed demos and an EP called “As the Angels Weep,” but then DIVINE EVE disbanded and the leader Xan Hammack moved to California to record the debut album under a new name CRIMSON RELIC, while the other members turned to their own projects. That was, until 2008, when DIVINE EVE decided to work together again. And now, after almost 15 years, the second, unfortunately only EP “Vengeful and Obstinate” is here.

17 minutes long record carries only 4 tracks, but from the very beginning you already know these are going to be damn good spent 17 minutes. The opener “Whispers of Fire” starts off the record after the fashion of classical old-school death metal, with brutal guitars and fast as hell drums, and although mostly I'm not a friend of this style, it impressed me immediately. The second track “The Ravages of Heathen Men” proceeds evidently heavier, with many doom metal influences. Last two songs “Vindication” and “Grievous Ascendance” then continue to rise in this spirit.

DIVINE EVE's music bears just a decent amount of originality, but this is compensated with great coordination and experience of the musicians – it needs nothing more than the rawness it has. We have no choice but to hope the band will manage to release a real full-length, because a quality death metal will always find its fans.
