Killer Songs: What Is Worse Than The Truth,” “Ratcatcher,” “Igniting The Flame”

Everyone loves a good thrash album, which is why “The Unholy Feast” from UK quintet The More I See deserves to be in a lot of people’s playlists right now. Sonically rooted in riffs, hooks, crackling drums, gruff vocals, and the timeless appeal of dueling guitars, The More I See may not be reinventing the wheel (much less the steel), but they still make for a helluva refreshing listen in these genre-saturated times.

After a lackluster debut got consigned to the depths of obscurity, the band returned guns-a-blazing in 2008 with a sophomore effort that harmonized melody and the brutal stuff. What awaits the listener are 12 winning tracks ranging from epic stadium-crowd sing alongs—“What Is Worse Than The Truth,” “The Siege Is On,” “The Unholy Feast”—to fast and furious numbers that just burn, burn, burn—“Ratcatcher,” “Bloodline,” “Soul on Auction,” “Igniting the Flame.” Throw in a few odd gems like the brooding “Empty”; old school tinged “Fear of Death”; the shamelessly modern sounding “Veiled By Greed”; and the final product is an album on the verge of classic status. Andy Sneap, who is responsible for the top-notch production heard here, must be a very proud man.

It shouldn’t escape anyone that The More I See are a bunch of talented guys. While their lineup has been far from consistent (the band has recently undergone a member overhaul) the musicianship in this latest (make that very late-est, “The Unholy Feast” came out May last year) are shit-in-your-pants good at what they do. Whether its mainman Gizz Butt’s ear-bleeding guitar fireworks, his partner Gav King’s faultless rhythm playing, Chad Sutherland’s unique vocals (somewhere along the lines of James Hetfield, Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows, and a punk singer), plus the ripping, bone rattling drums from Spike T. Smith, all conspire to hurt your neck. And so he won’t feel too bad, bass-man Lee Churchill ain’t exactly a slouch on his instrument either. These separate ingredients come together for an hour of sheer metal entertainment.

For thrash metal fans who find themselves savoring the modern approach of Shadows Fall, In Flames, Archenemy, and Bullet For My Valentine, The More I See are a promising band to watch. If these blokes can top this album with their next release, then metalheads across the globe will have good reason to celebrate in the coming years.
