In August of 2002 PAIN CONFESSOR was brought to life in Finland. From that time, they released some better or weaker albums, they were chosen the Newcomers of the year 2004 and did some hard working too. Turmoil is their first full length album recorded under the Megamania label.
PAIN CONFESSOR can be smoothly and easily enrolled on the list mentioning the classic melodic/death conventions. Turmoil is a pure melodic/death production, with its strengths and weaknesses. This album starts heavily with cool and dynamic Fiery Thorns followed by original and interesting Hollow Souls. The guitars work very nicely, Markkus hoarse voice is a good filling. There are moments when he proves, that apart from yelling, he can also sing with nice and strong voice. The drums are furiously fast and together with the simple keyboards parts create an interesting background for the guitars and the vocal. All in all, those keyboards could be a little bit more sophisticated, played with some finesse or imagination. Those do not have to be only simple fills, which slide behind the main themes. They are just too poor. Create nice climate, but done with some ass-kicking power they could have created some extra cool stuff. Underworld with its dooming motifs contributes to the whole, shows that the album is varied. The style and motifs change quite often, enrich the whole and are good indicators of PAIN CONFESSOR style. Let us hope, that they will stay on this path.
PAIN CONFESSOR show, that melodic death metal apart from being melodic, can also be original. Today, when one may think that everything has been played, they add some notes of freshness. This is not the first high premium quality album, but it is a good beginning.
