Signed to the new Tyrant Syndicate label (formed by Dark Throne’s Nocturno Culto), the return of black thrash purveyors Aura Noir has been a long time coming. Five to six years on from their last vicious affair ‘Deep Tracts of Hell’, Aura Noir has wasted no time in quickly reminding the metal world about the filthy, ugly concoction of old school nihilism they play.

With production values that rival 80’s thrash contemporaries Sodom (although nowhere near as hideous), ‘The Merciless’ is an eight-track 27-minute romp that will have you rummaging around for your long lost bullet belt and dog collar in a hope of reviving some of that ‘authentic’ black/thrash atmosphere of old.

Aura Noir, like Dark Throne before them are masters of this shit. Recalling a rough as guts sound from the days of snarling early Venom, Celtic Frost, Motorhead, Dark Angel and Destruction, ‘The Merciless’ pretty much lives up to its title. There is nothing remotely new about Aura Noir’s music – they play raw black thrash in the traditional sense – break neck drumming (from Aggressor), harsh driving riffage (from Mayhem’s Blasphemer) and the terrifying ‘Cronos-like’ vocals of Apollyon (ex-Cadaver/Cadaver Inc).

‘The Merciless’ easily rivals their past glories (including 1996’s ‘Black Thrash Attack) and is weighed down with a magnificent purveying ‘no-compromise’ attitude and spirit – a philosophy that falls well in line with the intention of the Tyrant Syndicate label. You won’t romantic gothic metal bands signed to this roster folks.

‘The Merciless’ offers straight up old school fury, delivered with impeccable taste and conviction. It might be swathed in the tradition of their influential masters, but nonetheless, Aura Noir makes a mighty impression.
