ESSENZA exists already about 20 years. The brothers Rizzello create cardinal body of band. However “Devil's Breath” is just the 3th full album and the first with English lyrics. I do not know previous releases of ESSENZA but “Devil's Breath” oscillates among Heavy and Thrash Metal from the beginning. The musical border is so smooth hat I can't qualifying which species of the music overweight…
Generally saying, the music sounds very classic – in frames of Metal. Here overweight the average-quick paces with sharp riffs full of various “metal melodies” and solos. Specific the singing oscillates among Dave Mustaine (MEGADETH) and Michael Kiske (ex-the HELLOWEEN). It is audible in the sound and the manner of singing. Particularly – during vocal burst of passions, which are supported by the second vocal. Some tracks portray typical heavy-power-metal solos – masterly, in neo-classical style or the sharp serves. And the interesting work of bass guitar pulsates in the background. The bass sometimes has something personal to show for listeners. I am not surprised anyway that there is good team-work here, because the brothers stand with guitars… Moreover the moments of Hard Rock sometimes appear here or even Rock'n'roll accents (e.g. in song “Rock'n'roll Blood” and “Flying Acrobats”).
The arrangements concentrate rather near to technical playing than on simple riffs. Though the many fragments fall into ears easily (particularly vocal refrains). But despite all I feel lack of stronger kick here. I do not know why. Maybe the reason is in the sound of the whole in retro style and maybe – the typical heavy/thrash's gunfire of riffs aren't here.
Listening “Devil's Breath” – I remember just the beginning of 90th years with my fascination of Thrash Metal in style of MEGADETH, ANTHRAX but and earlier times with HELLOWEEN.
