Cool Songs: Hordes of Chaos (A Necrologue for the Elite), Amok Run, Destroy What Destroys You

Germany’s original titans of thrash, KREATOR return to dominate the global metal scene with “Hordes of Chaos.” The said album follows their 2005 critically acclaimed effort “Enemy of God.” “Hordes of Chaos” features many of the aspects that made their last recording such an enjoyable listen.

The modern incarnation of KREATOR reveals a band of greater maturation. Although “Hordes of Chaos” marks the group’s twenty-fifth birthday, they continue to introduce new ideas, both musically and lyrically. Part of this comes from the group’s ability to incorporate sounds heard throughout their long career, yet move forward with a thicker, modernized production absent from earlier releases. Moses Schneider of Tritonus studio handled production duties, replacing the much-vaunted Andy Sneap, and Colin Richardson’s (SLIPKNOT, CRADLE OF FILTH) mixing.

Schneider and Richardson provide a valuable service to the album, for each instrument rings clearly, allowing the listener to absorb the full impact of each instrument. KREATOR’s current sound thrives on dynamics. Each track plays out like a book, each segment a different chapter, taking the listener into various areas of the human psyche. “Hordes of Chaos” analyzes the impact of war propaganda on the masses. The elite members of societies use propaganda as a tool for mind control, working on the masses’ emotions. Just like a modern newscast, the listener becomes subject to intense emotions such as anger and depression.

The title track opens the album with rich melodies, which incrementally build until hitting the speed-metal picking portions of each verse line. These moments resemble the swift-wrist techniques first found on the “Terrible Certainty” album. The following track, “Warcurse” includes an even sharper explosion of speed and aggression. “Escalation” features the trademark chugging guitar and hard-hitting drum style that characterize the group, complete with an epic old school metal instrumental break. “Demon Prince” and “Run Amok” both thrive on melody-driven passages, particularly dual guitar harmonies, which escalate into a total speed metal attack.

Very few bands in today’s metal scene have the ability to write music and lyrical concepts of such importance for the times, while maintaining the tradition that initially brought them to prominence. Rather than sounding tired and outdated, KREATOR comes across fresh and innovative. If “Hordes of Chaos” prognosticates the level of quality for 2009, we are in for a great year. Now, let us see what SLAYER has to offer.
