Two different groups, playing similar music, from two different places, decided to re-issue their albums under one label, and that is how the split ‘Hymns of the Fallen/Vastlands’ has been recorded. The groups are nearly of the same age, both of them were formed around 2000/2001, and both share black metal interest. Although, the guys from ZIRCON seem to be more ‘developed’, as their music is a mixture of black, thrash and death metal… but not to reveal too much…

‘Hymns of the Fallen’ is a proposition for fans who adore hoarse and chary of sounds death metal, as the tracks are very raw, deprived of flesh, only bones are left. Thus the music is quite innovative, although quite tiring also, especially when the whole starts to melt, and creates one pulp. On the other hand, the musicians perform everything very well, especially the bass line is good, for it is the one, who leads, with its muffled sound, this line is audible in each song – it carries the melody and is an original style indicator.

‘Vastlands’ is a proposition for people, who are into more fleshy and less innovative play. The music is aggressive, very powerful, and extremely heavy. The fast and hoarse riffs pulverize with their sound, not to mention the fantastic drum fills, which smite everything on their way. Heavy and fleshy growl contributes to the whole, which unfortunately also does not avoid the cardinal sin of repetition. But the material is so powerful and deadly, that it is much easier to forgive this drawback.

Both bands represent two different approaches towards black/death play: NEPHILLIM rely on underground-like sound, off-scene metal and very raw style of performance. ZIRCON, on the other hand, concentrates mainly on the power, therefore it is more vulnerable to repetitions and monotony. But both groups deserve a pat on the back, because they did very well. Hence, this compilation is very, very good.
