The band formed in 1999 released only two albums, which are an EP Mystic Lands and a split record Cosmic Evil/Ipsus Universum. The latter was recorded together with the Mexican INFINITUM OBSCURE, which is also a death metal group. Unfortunately, since 2004 ANCIENT GODS are inactive and there are no actual signs that they are going to start working again.
Cosmic Evil is an ideal example of a well prepared and performed death metal play. Fleshy riffs do not allow to sit indifferently, they wind up the atmosphere, and take it to the limits. What is a surprise, the music does not sound monotonously, probably because of the fact, that two different bands combined their material. But I have to admit, that ANCIENT GODS are the genuine dictators on this album, they took over the control. INFINITUM OBSCURE play also a good dark death, although their sound is in a kind of a shadow of the previous group. But IO actually are the ones, who survived. The album is heavy, obese even, everything thanks to the fleshy drums and guitar riffs, which are full of genuine energy. The whole compilation is a model death play, with two competing characteristic performers, of which one is more aggressive, the other more comprehend and coherent. But together they have created one of more interesting metal compilations of 2003. It is good, that such album saw the daylight.
I have to admit, that it is a relief to hear some ambitious death metal compositions. Compositions which area different and very varied. This was probably the best omen for ANCIENT GODS, a ticket to the bright future. Unfortunately, probably some misunderstandings and other problems forced the band to suspend activity. Lets just hope that some day they will be back.
