Cool Songs: My Burnt Wings, Behind the Placid Mask of the Starlit Cosmos

“Veiled Hideousness” is a re-release of the group’s debut demo with a couple live bonus tracks taken from “Under an Occult Sun.” BBF’s initial full-length “Under an Occult Sun” is slightly more technical than “Veiled” and the keyboards take on more of a fantasy feel compared to the gothic layering of “Veiled.”

Many feel “Veiled” is an emulation of early Cradle of Filth and that is partially true. The high pitch and rhythm of Tommy Demur’s vocals undoubtedly are similar to Dani Filth of COF fame. Also, the incorporation of thrash and death metal into symphonic black metal resemble COF. Some riffs violently churn or triumphantly gallop; while melodic leads add balance and mood. There is a different feeling COF, though. This different feeling is due to dissimilar lyrical topics.

Lyrically is where the band truly shines. Each song is scribed with the hand of an expert story teller. Various keyboard settings such as organ, piano, and reed synth illuminate tales of alien progenitors (Behind the Placid Mask of the Starlit Cosmos), the David-Icke-inspired yarn of reptilian nobility (“Reptilian Shudders”), and the moribund “My Burnt Wings,” which are far different from the vamp and satanic themes of COF.

Although released in 2003, “Under an Occult Sun” is a more accurate gage of this band’s direction. “Veiled Hideousness” seems a developmental effort. Some may prefer “Veiled” because of its strong COF influence and darker atmosphere. BBF is releasing a new album in May. It will be interesting to see how the band progresses.
