Cool Songs: Blunted at Birth, Reefer Stashed Place, I will Smoke you

MUNICIPAL WASTE bassist, LandPhil's primary interests in life are partying and metal, most notably Death Metal (if you have ever seen his picture, he proudly displays an OBITUARY patch on his jean jacket). During some time away from the studio and the tour bus, Phil decided to pursue those two interests with his side project CANNABIS CORPSE. Through the help of his brother, Hallhammer on the drums and Weedgrinder on vocals, Landphil has created a sticky, stinking hybrid thread of weed-worshipping Death Metal.

CANNABIS CORPSE “Blunted at Birth” is in no way deceptive in title or band name. CC sounds exactly like an older CANNIBAL CORPSE album. “Blunted…” has everything you would hear on an old school Corpse album: bloody, meat-grinding rhythms, bone-crushing bass and drums—and putrid, Chris Barnes-emulated guttural growls. The trio has perfected the trademark Corpse tempo change from brutal, grinding groove to blasting speed. Take all these elements patented by Corpse and put them in a four foot tall bong and smoke it then you have CANNABIS CORPSE.

All the song lyrics and titles are true to CANNIBAL CORPSE, filled with perverse, violent imagery, yet intertwined with dope references. The song titles are somewhat of a parody of Corpse songs, in no way making fun of Corpse because the band are big fans of the group, but rearranging words from the original Corpse title with weed allusions. They changed “Butchered at Birth” to “Blunted at Birth”, “Force Fed Shitty Grass” is an alteration of “Force Fed Broken Glass”, and “I Cum Bud” replaces “I Cum Blood”. If you know anything about CANNIBAL CORPSE, you’ll figure out the rest.

They surely conceived the song concepts sometime near the 4:20 mark. Each song creates imaginative scenes dripping with pus, blood, and THC. “Force Fed Shitty Grass” is a tale of turning an egg-headed, straight-shooting square into a ravenous reefer head. “I will smoke you” is about a grave robber who makes a bong out of a corpse’s skull. CC posted a blog about a teenager who tried doing this exact grisly act. That news clipping may have been the inspiration for “I Will Smoke You.” Some of my favorite lyrics come from “Blunted at Birth”: “You have become a human bong/For this weakling fetus to grow inside/Putrid, fetid, infected womb/Too lazy to be born.”

Stoner CANNIBAL CORPSE fans should find this album quite amusing. CC has perfected just about every aspect of CANNIBAL CORPSE, with the lack of stellar production and lack of solos being the only facets absent. The lack of solos didn’t take all that much away from the music, though, neither did the less-than-professional recording. Landphil did a commendable job on the recording, considering he used a Boss BR 900 digital 8 track. I expected it to sound much worse than it does after reading the album’s liner notes on the recording.
