The Polish metal scene has spawned some of today’s most barbarously aggressive bands in the underground today. These guys have clawed their way up from the chasms of the metal scene (in both notoriety and talent) since the old “Cerebral Concussion” days.
The production, writing and overall execution has greatly improved from “The Past Against The Future.” I’ve read rumblings of “this CD offers nothing new..” and “..no innovation” but I don’t think these guys are out to break new ground. Their ability to piece together the hooks of grind core, the aggression of death metal and old school thrash into modern arrangements is enough to leave Dr. Frankenstein scowling in envy. “Its alive!”
The CD is choked full of the speed and intensity that have become the mainstay for Polish metal acts but avoids the overly simplistic trappings that befall some of their country men. The songs employ just enough simplicity to maintain that barbarously heavy groove that fans of this region’s metal crave. The string work of Bony, Dino and Novy (VADER ex-BEHMOTH) REEK! of their old school thrash influences (which I am ALL about) but I could do without some of the solos. They are used sparingly enough but just come off a bit forced to me? Aside from that I like what I hear. Drummer “Basti” has a really creative style… His blasts throtal and he has some really original jazz style bell-work going on if you listen closely enough. The arrangements are epic, the strings drop into arpeggio sweeps, abrupt cadences and open chord breaks that will leave you in a neck brace. From cadavers of death/black/speed metal, thrash and grind-core, “Devilyn” have birthed a beast all their own into the muck of the metal underground. The townspeople below are shrieking at it’s approach.
