VERBAL DECEPTION - "Aurum Aetus Piraticus"
Scarab Metal Productions 2006

Music: Pirate Metal
Website: www.verbaldeception.com
Duration: 49:52 minutes (11 tracks)
Country: Canada

It looks like the Canadians are fascinated of pirates because the not only whole binding of disc is consecrated for pirates' subject matter (e.g. the cover-art, the small map like from films about pirates) but and the lyrical layer, as and the name of kind music is definite as Pirate Metal… so what is the Pirate Metal contained in 11 compositions?

In principle the compositions oscillate somewhere among the Power Metal's kick and the melodious death metal with growling, what in some moments I would place among the bands in style of CREMATORY, old AMORPHIS, CEMETARY or CEREMONIAL OATH, despite that mentioned bands aren't Power Metal, nor Death Metal. This is simply such difficult to qualification mix. Though when I listened VERBAL DECEPTION I in some moments I also thought about cult "Under Jolly Roger" of RUNNING WILD. But I'm not sure was the thought because I found some similarities musical or pirate climate only?

The tunes are very melodious and energetic, mainly they are leaning on the dynamic dead-beat guitar's riffs and the melodious solos with the varied work of drums which gives the pace (from quick driving to very slow knocks, like in Doom Metal. The keyboards' arrangements create the background ideal to the guitar's subjects as well as they emphasize some phrases (turning up predatory or folk climate). It in some moments really gives sound of pirate to the music and sometimes pushes associations with pirate music in tavern or local atmosphere or brawl what it's strengthened by the sharp guitar-percussive musical subjects. Though and the keyboards have own folk-classic "five minutes" here. Of course the predatory growling leads the whole, because it would not can be different… pirates are hard guys, nor womanish singers.

The whole is conceived nicely and even originally, because we have Viking Metal quite a lot, and yet pirates also are interesting subject.
