SVÖLK - "Svölk" Tuba Records & Two Side Moon/SLW Promotions 2009 Music: Bear Metal
Website: www.svolk.net
Duration: 42:14 minutes (9 songs)
Country: Norway
I do not know what is with this "Bear Metal". The information was added to digipack tells that SVÖLK released first album of Bear Metal in history. In other place is written that this is hard-rock masterpiece inspired by music of metal masters from 80th years. Moreover written on digipack information defines that SVÖLK is "The Founding Fathers of True Norwegian Bear Metal"…
And therefore what is this Bear Metal? Generally the music possesses lightly dirty sound and it is very impulsive, dynamic, pretty predatory as well as heavy and simultaneously very melodious. This possesses features of many interesting species - Hard Rock, Southern Metal, Groove Metal, Stoner Metal and Heavy Metal. Some patents are very similar to METALLICA (from albums - "Load" and "Reload") - particularly I mean the guitar subjects and melodies. There also is the similarity to DANZIG (mainly in dark-psychedelic climate and in vocals) or to BLACK LABEL SOCIETY (the guitar serves and the vocals) and even to BLACK SABBATH (with Ozzy), so the quite good mixture came into being… But despite this mix, there is cohesion and certainty oneself in the music.
However I perceive some paradox in the music of SVÖLK - though the musicians are Norwegians playing "True Norwegian Bear Metal" but the sound of the album is very American (in sense of South part of United States). Moreover the first track begins Banjo's play. Maybe the name Bear Metal is trick of marketing? From the second side it is hard to qualify ourselves playing such mixture to be original?
