Spanish ONIRICOUS arose from the ashes of GHÜL. “La Maledicion” is their latest material, after two albums. From the moment the name was changed to the current one, the band is possessed by the spirit of old-school Death Metal and this is clearly heard in these eight compositions. And ONIRICOUS does not limit its inspiration to any specific death-metal geographical zone, because the inspiration for the creation could be bands from the US, like old DEATH, MASTER and MORBID ANGEL or from Europe, like PESTILENCE or MORGOTH. So, technical playing has an important aspect here (but not without exaggeration)…
The mysterious intro announces that it will not be idyllic … The intro is short, but creating movie mood… And then… Brutal and powerful arrangements are the basis here. Fast and often blasts rhythms rule. “sixteenth nots” of guitar riffs acquire a musical space, sharing it with crushing dark slowdowns and guitar solos (which emphasize this possessed and dark mood through quick turbulence or atmospheric melodies).
Of course, vocally is classical. Thunderous growlings come out from Spanish lyrics. I think every Spanish-speaking band sounds darker than the English-speaking one. And so it is in this case. This is the perfect language for dark movies and dark music.
Gothic outro finishes this material in a truly soundtrack horror atmosphere.
Spain is going through very hard times these days… The country is in a dark embrace of a pandemic. May they get out of it all.
