The band’s members say that TORNADO KID was founded by a group of old good friends in 2013 in St. Petersburg. Before the discussed album, they recorded three EPs and shot one video. They played as a suport to such groups as PROTEST THE HERO (CAN), AIRBOURNE (AUS), OUR LAST NIGHT (USA). They also gave a lot of concerts, mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, but also as a headliner at the Rocks Rock festival in Finland. They compare own music to WILSON, MAYLENE AND THE SONS OF DISASTER and MONSTER TRUCK.
The title of the debut full-time disc, “The Hated Ten,” refers to the extremely heavy and tedious work they put in the recording of these ten tracks, so tiresome that they hated them. 🙂 The work, however, brought fruit in the form of an excellent artistic effect. The music is a great hard rock, with influences of metal, blues, and sometimes hardcore. The songs are short but dynamic, energetic, galloping, thrilling. Some of them are aggressive like “Killer Song” or “The Wolves”. However, hard rock climates are dominated. The last track “Retired Cowboy” is suitable as a single, it is rhythmic, melodious, hit song. Its additional advantage is the text which, by spreading atheism, can offend the religious feelings of many Catholics.
The tracks are intriguingly composed, a lot going on in them, they include slowdowns, stops, guitar’s licks and solos, nice bass parts, different types of singing, great backing vocals. All musicians have mastered their instruments very well, but the main guitarist is outstanding. The vocalist is engaging, spontaneous, differently modulates his voice – from whisper to scream.
The whole is very professional. I didn’t find mistakes. Well, someone can say that TORNADO KID does not bring anything new to music. Yes, but how much life is in this music!
