Deathcore is quite active this year with a lot of new releases being successful and a lot more to come. Monitoring this genre for a while now, I see a lot of Evolution taking place within this genre. With Thy Art Is Murder and Gravemind putting up some unique records, Deathcore took a sudden turn in terms of Style. Protosequence’s Latest EP Biophagus is a newer addition to the list of Non-Generic Deathcore Albums. Before reviewing the album, here is a short bio. Protosequence devised in the year 2016 plays a genre that is similar to an amalgamation of Tech Death, Prog Death, Metalcore and Most Importantly Deathcore. The band draws influence from acts like All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, and The Black Dahlia Murder. With a foothold on their influences, they root their music in technicality while layering emotional, yet gruff vocals weaved into every track. Their stylistic inclination can be roughly bordered as Technical Deathcore or Death Metal. As some of the Metalcore influences makes theor sound more inclined to Deathcore, They cannot be generalised as Technical Death Metal. Henceforth the dudes play Technical Deathcore with a tinge of Tech Death and Prog effluents.

Biophagus is a 4 track EP released in the year 2017. Being the Sophomore effort of the band, Biophagus showcases an evolved and matured form of Protosequence. With their debut album being successful, this album is not far from being perfect. With Proggy Atmosphere, Biophagus sounds extremely beautiful with Djenty Guitar passages giving us that Brutal tone with the Tech Death-esque passages showing off their Creativity and Complexity. All of the four tracks being executed to perfection, Dudes over Protosequence have really nailed the album. I guess I did get some undistorted pickings on Shepherd, showing their level of versatality. However the band is too complex and technical as the Guitar tones so produced gets saturated and stay less memorable. But still I dig the brutal breakdowns that they use amidst the transition section which for sure will get the masses moving and moshing. With the instrumentation aside, The vocals are spot on and the instrumentation so written make the vocal work less laggy or boring. Deliverance is a key aspect for any Vocalist, after finishing the EP for more than 2 times Im sure that the deliverance so done is perfect and everyone might find it appealing and brutal. Alas all we get is an unstoppable addiction towards their work.

Biophagus as a whole is a beautiful album with a lot of music going into it. It proves that Deathcore is not restricted to chuggy guitar passages instead, it can melt your face with some extreme guitar riffage. This Multi Layered, minimalistic kinda record will surely get your day moving. Biophagus is an Epitome of Euphony, Brutality and Creativity. Very much looking forward to whatever Protosequence releases next. I do hope for more memorable guitar passages. Do yourself a favor by picking up this EP.
