METHWITCH – interview with the band

Methwitch is one among the newer Deathcore bands to emerge out of the Underground Scene. Even though the band is new in terms of origin, they claim themselves being different from the newer ones. The brainchild of this Deathcore solo project was kind enough to respond to some of our questions regarding his future project, Modern Deathcore and most importantly his take on Infant Annihilator.

Would you like to Introduce your band to our readers? Did you play in other bands before Methwitch?

My name is Cameron McBride, and I play everything in Methwitch haha. As far as other bands go, I play guitar for a hardcore/metalcore band called TwelvexTitans. I also do some singing/songwriting under the name Dakota Mourning.

Your last album Shadowkeeper was good enough to make an impact on a lot of fans. How hard was it to record an EP all alone?

I actually prefer recording alone. I can go as fast or as slow as I want, and I can make any changes without having to worry about anyone else’s input. Recording is a lot less stressful when there’s no arguing or butting heads.

Talking about albums, Your Upcoming Album Piss is about to go live on the following month. Care to share some information about the album?

Piss will be available on itunes, apple music, spotify, etc on October 13th. It’s over an hour of music, and I can honestly say that it’s the heaviest and most diverse thing I’ve ever done musically.

Is there any underlying theme to your lyrics?

It all depends on the album really. Rotting Away had a few different themes, but a good chunk of it was about depression, anxiety, and abandoning my religious beliefs. I was going through a huge turning point in my life, and part of the reason I started Methwitch in the first place was to have a creative outlet to get out all of the negativity I was feeling. I feel like Rotting Away reflected a lot of that.

Shadowkeeper was a paranormal themed concept EP. I basically took different types of spirits, entities, etc, and wrote songs from their perspectives. Some of the inspiration was from personal paranormal experiences I’ve had, and some was inspired by movies and stuff.

Piss is the most diverse album I’ve done both musically and lyrically. So there’s a bunch of different themes. There’s anti pedophile/rapist tracks, anti racism tracks, anti religion tracks, burn tracks, typical death metal stuff, you name it.

How did you choose the order of the songs in your upcoming album?

There’s a huge mix of songs on the album, from 2 minute grind tracks to 12 minute doom tracks. So I just tried to spread the tracks throughout the album as evenly as possible.

Is there anything you want to experiment with musically that you haven’t attempted yet?

The only thing I can really think of is maybe doing some symphonic parts eventually. I’m a huge fan of bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth. I’m honestly surprised I haven’t experimented with that kind of thing sooner. Maybe I’ll have to mess with it on an EP or something.

Do you see an advantage of being independent rather than being on a big record label?

It’s just nice not having to answer to anyone. I can create whatever I want, whenever I want. I can go at my own pace and not have to worry about fulfilling contracts and what not.

What is your biggest accomplishment as a band?

Honestly, just having fans from all around the world. It blows my mind. When I started this project, I did it for myself and wasn’t really expecting anyone to catch on or be super into it. I’m not huge by any means, but it trips me out that I have people from other continents messaging me, telling me how much they love my music. I’m super thankful.

Deathcore is one among the most debated and hated subgenres of Metal. What is your take on this entire hatred and Do you think Deathcore is still strong these days?

I’m probably going to sound like an asshole here, but I can’t get into 90% of new deathcore. There are a few newer bands that kill it, but for the most part I don’t like what it has become. A lot of it just comes off as overproduced, uninspired, and emotionless to me. It seems like too many bands are focusing on who can do the lowest vocals and who can do the slowest breakdowns without adding any kind of substance. I’m just not about it. I miss the deathcore from 10 years ago that was raw and pissed off.

Recently Infant Annihilator got banned from Spotify and Itunes for various set of reasons including Violent lyrical themes. Being a band yourself is this like a warning for you to stop using Violent lyricism or You would continue using them?

I’m personally not a huge fan of their lyrical content because it’s kind of the opposite of what I stand for (the child molesting stuff is a little edgy for me), but metal bands are always going to write about questionable stuff. I don’t think that they should have been banned. In the end, it is satire. If people don’t like it, they don’t have to listen to it or buy it.

Some of my songs do have violent themes. Mostly violence directed towards criminals…like rapists and pedophiles haha. So pretty much the opposite of IA. If itunes and spotify don’t like it, then it is what it is. I’m not going to change my lyrical content for anyone.

What are you listening to at the moment that you would like to recommend?

As far as heavy stuff goes, the new Decrepit Birth album rips. I’ve been jamming the Gatecreeper full length a lot too. Also, Belphegor, Cradle of Filth, and Kublai Khan all have new albums coming out this month that I’m super hyped for.

As far as chill stuff, I’ve been jamming The Cure almost non stop for the last couple months. Brand New and Turnover also both put out new albums recently that are really good.

Finally, Why Do You think that our readers should buy your upcoming record?

In my opinion, Piss is going to be one of the heaviest, darkest, and most diverse metal albums you’re going to hear for a while. I don’t think it’s able to fit under any genre or label. It’s just evil, pissed, raw, and real.

Thank You for sparing some of your valuable time to give us an Interview. All the Very Best. Cheers!

Thank you for the opportunity!
